Royal Air Force Yacht Club

The Royal Air Force Yacht Club began in the 1930s at Calshot, where Royal Air Force officers sailed dinghies and moored yachts on nearby creeks. The group received formal recognition from Coastal Command before World War II interrupted activities. Surviving members reformed the club in 1947 and, with support from senior RAF personnel, purchased Riverside House in Hamble-le-Rice in 1952. This riverside property has served as the club’s base ever since, with extensions added to meet increasing demand.

Riverside House stands on Rope Walk, offering direct views across the River Hamble and straightforward access to the Solent. The position suits a variety of boating pursuits, including passages to the Isle of Wight, the south coast, the Channel Islands, and northern France.

The club maintains both walk-ashore and mid-stream moorings, supplemented by courtesy launches for convenience. Additional provisions include dinghy and outboard storage, maintenance berths, showers, laundry facilities, and parking.

The clubhouse features a full bar and catering services, supporting both everyday use and larger gatherings. Affiliation with the Hamble River Sailing Club allows members to undertake RYA training courses at reduced rates. These arrangements ensure practical support for those developing skills or maintaining vessels.

Membership welcomes individuals with an interest in sailing or motor boating, including those without service connections. Reciprocal agreements with other yacht clubs enable members to use facilities during travels. The club organises rallies, cruising outings, and regattas, accommodating competitive racing alongside relaxed voyages. Social gatherings complement the boating calendar, contributing to a professional yet informal atmosphere.
